Storychat User Guide

6. Policies & Safety

To help everyone enjoy StoryChat with peace of mind, we've gathered the questions we hear most often about content guidelines and visibility settings. New here? No worries — we'll walk you through it one step at a time.

You can check them while creating a character.

On the character creation screen, click the View Guidelines link near the Safe Mode toggle, and you'll immediately see what content is allowed and what isn't.

Giving the guidelines a quick read before you build a character can save you from having your content restricted later. For a closer look at the creation flow, see [Related: Creating a Character (Quick Creation)].

We take action in stages, depending on how serious the violation is.

  • Content removal — The character, story, image, or other item in question may be taken down.

  • Account restriction — Access to certain features may be temporarily blocked.

  • Permanent suspension — If a violation is severe or repeated, the account may be permanently suspended.

Some content is never allowed, regardless of your settings. Prohibited content — including any sexual depiction of minors — is never permitted under any circumstances, whether Safe Mode is off or however you've set your visibility. As long as you respect this one line, you're free to create to your heart's content. For the full set of standards, see [Related: Content & Safety / Community Guidelines].

Other people can't see my character (or story). Why is that?

It's usually one of two settings. Let's check them one at a time.

1. Visibility is set to Private

  • Private: Only you can see it.

  • Public: Others can find and play it too.

  • To make it visible to others, switch it to Public.

2. Safe Mode is on (for adult-content characters)

  • For adult-themed characters, Safe Mode must be turned off.

  • A character whose Safe Mode hasn't been turned off won't be visible to users who haven't disabled Safe Mode.

  • In other words, if you've created an adult character, the creator needs to turn Safe Mode off and the viewer needs to disable Safe Mode too — only then can both sides see and play it.

Quick checklist

- Is visibility set to Public?

- If it's adult content, did you turn Safe Mode off for the character?

- Still not showing up? Check whether the viewer has disabled Safe Mode on their own end.
